Happy New Year, nerds! Time for January Nerd Night. We’ll be gathering once again at Magic Beans Gaming Café and this month we are collecting items for the Battered Women and Children’s Shelter. This facility, run by Family Violence Prevention Services, gives every person seeking help and shelter a safe haven. They run a 24-hour crisis hotline, offer case management, a children’s program, counseling, emergency food and clothing (more on that in a moment), legal advocacy and referral, medical and dental care, parent education, workshops and support groups, and a lot of educational services that help women and their children become self-sufficient.

The shelter is in need of a number of personal and household items that are accepted in new or gently-used condition. I’ll post a complete list in the charity profile later this week, but here are some highlights. All of these things will be collected at Nerd Night on January 8th. If you have a large item or need to donate at another time, give the donation center a call at (210) 733-3536 and Mari will make arrangements.

The December event will benefit the San Antonio Food Bank. Bring non-perishable food items and help us fill a barrel of food to help the hungry people of San Antonio. Planned events include board game tournaments (TBA), Magic the Gathering, RPG demonstrations and open gaming. Choose something from the Magic Beans game library or bring your own!

Food drives are critical to the San Antonio Food Bank’s ongoing mission of collecting and redistributing millions of pounds of food to individuals and families in Southwest Texas who don’t know where their next meal is coming from. If you don’t want to bring food items, we will also be accepting cash donations. Monetary donations are equally as important and are used to leverage the San Antonio Food Bank’s bulk buying power. For example, every dollar donated provides 10 pounds of food for needy families.

food-bank-eventThe San Antonio Food Bank (SAFB) provides emergency food assistance to over 58,000 people every week through a network of more than 530 partner agencies in Southwest Texas. SAFB is committed not only to providing emergency support, but also to working to address the systemic issues that cause hunger and poverty. See below for a list of the “Twelve Most Wanted” items and pick up some extra groceries to bring to Magic Beans between December 4th – 14th. If you’d rather donate cash, follow this link to our Virtual Food Drive. Every dollar donated provides seven meals for hungry Texans!
